COVID-19 Face Shield for HCP

SLC Face Shields meet the requirements of the FDA letter of Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for medical face shield manufacture during the COVID-19 pandemic as detailed in Sections II and IV of the letter. This EUA specifically applies to use by Health Care Providers (HCP) as part of important PPE to help protect from COVID-19 exposure and to extend the life of face masks worn underneath the shield during this pandemic. Details on this compliance are part of the  Usage and Care document  which is provided to HCP and facilities as required by the EUA.  As of mid-May, 2020, there seems to be an increased supply of mostly single-use face shields which are selling for $5-$8 each. Our shields are multiple-use, much more sturdy, extend up protecting the forehead, and provide more space to use a stethoscope, googles, etc. They are preferred over disposables by HCP who have used them. We have now shipped 440  500 (2020 July update) face shields to the Four Corners area, to 10 Native American medical centers including Navajo, Hopi, Ute, and Zuni tribes. Our shipments go directly to specific centers and recently have been via Angel Flight West . We managed to get shields to all the surging clinics just in time. We will provide replacement parts and additional shields as needed for as long as they are needed by providers. 500 sturdy reusable shields (thanks to Prusa 3D for a great design) are roughly equal to 15,000 disposable shields - and ours can be renewed in a few seconds with a new clear plastic for another 30 days of use.  CHC  has achieved 30+ days of use with multiple cleanings per day at the SDR Covid clinic and they are on the second round after renewal. The PETG materials used are holding up very well to hospital cleanings, especially bleach-based formulations.

May 03 - 380 reusable shields shipped to Four Corners area - equal to over 11,000 disposables. This is an estimate based on use for 30 shifts vs one shift. That is the design goal, and replacement parts are available. In the chaos of the current crisis it is hard to get accurate usage data but we are working on that. We put in an extra push over the weekend to ship 40 more and as of Sunday night have now shipped a total of 80 to Gallup, NM - which Governor Grisham has put under the state "Riot Control Act" to try to get the virus outbreak under control - here is an LA Times article .
