Some 3D Printer Stats

My workhorse Prusa i3Mk2 has needed some repairs and small upgrades but it is still soldiering on. I've learned to do scheduled maintenance at least every Sunday. Here are some stats about its use during the Pandemic. Keep in mind this is just one of the half-dozen printers in use on this project by the printing team . All together we have gone through several 10 lb Filamatrix spools and at least that many 1 kg spools of Matterhackers. Early on, getting any PETG filament was a challenge with lead times of 4+ weeks. The Prusa reports 3.6 km of 1.75 mm PETG filament used . When it gets pushed out the 0.4 mm dia nozzzle, that's equal to 69 km of actual printed filament . That's 75,000 yards . About 750 football field-lengths of filament! PETG has a density of about 1.27 gm/cc. A 1 kg spool holds about 327 meters of 1.75 mm filament. A 10 lb spool holds 1490 meters of 1.75 mm dia filament. We've been purchasing 10 lb spools of clear PETG from  Filamatrix  due to their COVI

600 FDA EUA Face Shields Now in Use

600 of our reusable shields is roughly equal to 18,000 disposables! That 30-day/shift use number is holding up in the field. We have now shipped to physical therapists, teachers, speech therapists, orchestra members, church workers, social workers, etc in TX, OH, NY, CO, and other states. Demand for face shields has slowed as there is now a glut of disposable shields available, both from China and domestically. But we are still providing them to HCP such as much of the Pediatric ED at the UofU. We have great stock of all the parts and materials so please let us know if you need shields or replacement parts. Since early August I've been able to keep up with demand with my own printers and give the 3D print team a rest. Some printer stats are coming up in the next post.

SLC Face Shields are FDA Authorized

SLC Face Shields meet the requirements of the FDA letter of Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for medical face shield manufacture during the COVID-19 pandemic as detailed in Sections II and IV of the letter. This EUA specifically applies to use by Health Care Providers (HCP) as part of important PPE to help protect from COVID-19 exposure and to extend the life of face masks worn underneath the shield during this pandemic. Details on this compliance are part of the  Usage and Care document  which is provided to HCP and facilities as required by the EUA.  As of mid-May, 2020, there seems to be an increased supply of mostly single-use face shields which are selling for $5-$8 each. Our shields are multiple-use, much more sturdy, extend up protecting the forehead, and provide more space to use a stethoscope, googles, etc. They are preferred over disposables by HCP who have used them. Our shields last a long time, can be easily renewed, and reduce landfill waste. And they are currently being

500 face shields shipped to Four Corners area

We have now shipped 440  500 (2020 July update) face shields to the Four Corners area, to 10 Native American medical centers including Navajo, Hopi, Ute, and Zuni tribes. Our shipments go directly to specific centers and recently have been via Angel Flight West . We managed to get shields to all the surging clinics just in time. We will provide replacement parts and additional shields as needed for as long as they are needed by providers. 500 sturdy reusable shields (thanks to Prusa 3D for a great design) are roughly equal to 15,000 disposable shields - and ours can be renewed in a few seconds with a new clear plastic for another 30 days of use.  CHC  has achieved 30+ days of use with multiple cleanings per day at the SDR Covid clinic and they are on the second round after renewal. The PETG materials used are holding up very well to hospital cleanings, especially bleach-based formulations.

Shipped 380 reusable shields - equal to over 11,000 disposables

May 03 - 380 reusable shields shipped to Four Corners area - equal to over 11,000 disposables. This is an estimate based on use for 30 shifts vs one shift. That is the design goal, and replacement parts are available. In the chaos of the current crisis it is hard to get accurate usage data but we are working on that. We put in an extra push over the weekend to ship 40 more and as of Sunday night have now shipped a total of 80 to Gallup, NM - which Governor Grisham has put under the state "Riot Control Act" to try to get the virus outbreak under control - here is an LA Times article . Thanks to Angel Flight West for providing free air shipment to airports close to the recipients in the Four Corners area.

Reusable face shields shipping to Native American medical facilities

Face shields specifically intended for medical providers are shipping to Native American medical facilities in the Four Corners area where there is a major Covid-19 outbreak. These are sturdy, cleanable, and re-usable. Shipments started April 10, 2020. These are being provided at zero cost. The situation on tribal lands is not good - just the Navajo Nation has 300,000 members and has a per capita infection rate 10 times higher than Arizona and the third-highest infection rate in the country behind New York and New Jersey, according to news reports.  See this  Deseret News article from Apr 20, 2020 . We are shipping to ten medical facilities, here not in order of size: Hopi Health Care Center Kayenta Health Center Utah Navajo Health System Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility Tuba City Regional Health Care Center Tsehootsooi Medical Center Northern Navajo Medical Center Gallup Indian Medical Center Crownpoint Healthcare Facility Zuni Comprehensive Health Center
